Steps for Choosing a Contractor for Creative Wedding Photography

by | Apr 12, 2018 | Photographer

When it comes to wedding planning, one of the most important tasks is finding an experienced wedding photographer. While you can see the flowers and cake you order before the wedding, you will not have photographer until after. That is too late to decide they are not what you wanted. It is especially important to choose a skilled photographer if you have any special creative requests. For example, if you are interested in portrait photography, make sure your contractor offers that.

Do Some Research

The first step you should take is searching up local photographers, such as Holladay Photography, and reading reviews. See what people like and what they do not. Take a look at the photographer’s websites and get an idea of what style they bring to a photo. You can also visit their social media pages to see additional feedback and gauge the personality of the contractor.

Hold Interviews

You will need to meet your potential photographer if you have determined you like their style and their fees are reasonable for you. Make a call to determine if they are available on your wedding date. Have a few photographers you then visit with to ask questions and gauge compatibility. As an example, if you want an LGBT wedding photographer, make sure that is something that is an option.

View Galleries or Albums

If you have narrowed down your options, it is a good idea to ask to see some galleries or albums from weddings the photographer has shot at. However, ask for the entire set of photos from a couple of weddings. This lets you see the shots that turned out fantastic and the ones that weren’t quite as good. It can give you an idea of the average skill of the photographer. Consider the setting as well. If you are having your wedding outdoors, photos in natural light will be useful to peruse.

Ask About Rights

Some contracts with a photographer will state that the photographer owns the photos. This lets them use the images in advertising and promotion. You also may only be allowed to share photos with a watermark, or some credit to them applied to the photos. Make sure to ask about this and negotiate for what you want from the situation.
