If you are looking to start a family and you are not able to do it on your own, you might want to consider looking into working with a surrogate mother in California.

How Much Does a Surrogate Mother Cost in California?

Statistics show that California is one of the top states in number of children being born to surrogate mothers. There are no standards or regulations for surrogate mother costs in California, however, various sources with knowledge of the industry suggest that a surrogate mother can cost between $20,000 and $120,000. Therefore, it makes sense, if you hope to become a parent through surrogacy, the first thing you need to do is make sure you have the financial means to pay for it.

Why Does it Cost So Much?

The biggest item on the bill is the surrogate’s compensation fee. Little hard data exists presently about payment to surrogate mothers in California, or any state, however, there is a vast amount of information to be found on the internet from agencies and personal accounts that place the payment to surrogate mothers as low as $5,000, to as high as $50,000.

The less expensive option is traditional surrogacy – when the surrogate mother is inseminated with sperm from the intended father and she is the biological mother to the child. The more expensive option is gestational surrogacy when an unrelated embryo is implanted into the surrogate mother via in vitro fertilization.

Medical expenses for the surrogate mother contribute a good chunk to the bill. Prenatal care, pre-natal vitamins, ultra-sounds and other medical tests for mother and baby, can add up quite quickly.

Support costs for the surrogate mother may also be billed to intended parents. Some agencies cover the surrogate mother’s housing, food and living expenses for the duration of the pregnancy.

All intended parents entering a surrogate arrangement in any state must employ an attorney. Legal fees range from $2,000 to $20,000. And of course there is the agency’s fee, which covers their services and overhead expenses.

Is Financial Assistance Available to Cover Surrogate Mother Costs in California?

Yes, there is financial assistance available to hopeful couples. Surrogate agencies often provide loans or payment plans to intended parents. Other options are much the same as financing for anything else, such as home equity loans, second mortgages and withdrawal from 401K accounts. There are also some grant programs available for intended parents who meet specific criteria, such as LGBT couples.
