The Big Schlep

The Big Schlep

The big move is coming up, and you have to figure out how to get from Northridge to points unknown come graduation. You can start preparing for it now by paring down what you want to take with you. You also need to start looking at Northridge movers. You might be tempted by a cheap rate, but you need to make sure that you are dealing with a legit company.

What makes a moving company legit?

In California, moving companies are regulated by the Public Utilities Commission. All moving companies must have a permit, past criminal background checks, and must show proof of insurance. If you’ve never hired a moving company before, there are some other things that you need to know.

  1. If you hire a moving company three or more days in advance of your move, they have to give you a copy of their moving services agreement. They also have other documents that they are required by California law to give you. This includes a document called “Important Notice about Your Move” and “Moving Household Goods in the State of California.”
  2. Moving companies are not allowed to present you with an estimate in writing until they conduct an on-site inspection and see the items that you wish to move. Verbal estimates and estimates given over the Internet are not enforceable, and are illegal.
  3. A legitimate moving company must provide a “Not to Exceed” quote for all moves. This is the top dollar amount that you can be charged for your move, exclusive of additional services added on later. Those changes must also be detailed in a form called “Change Order for Moving Services.”

Keeping these important factors firmly in mind will help you to choose a legitimate, experienced, and honest moving company for your big schlep from college into the world.
