What to Wear Under a Leotard

Gymnastics leotards come in many shapes and sizes, but all of them have one problem in common: undergarments. Like with other unique sportswear, including figure skating dresses and volleyball shorts, figuring out the correct undergarments can be an incredible challenge. Like some of these other sports, gymnastics has a very appearance oriented aspect to it. It is extremely difficult to wear underwear under a leotard with a high leg cut, but competitors can actually get points deducted for having visible underwear. This can be difficult to explain to young gymnasts, and presents other issues for older gymnasts, so here are a few tips when it comes to the balance of comfort and aesthetic.

Go Commando

This is the most popular strategy for avoiding problems with underwear. While it makes a lot of sense, some gymnasts, especially young or pre-teen ones, just aren’t comfortable with it, and that’s understandable. Some fabrics go see-through under bright lights, which could be very embarrassing for a commando gymnast. In addition, if your leotard doesn’t fit well or is getting too tight, it could verge on obscene, and if it’s that time of the month things can get complicated. If you have the confidence to go commando, it’s definitely your best option, but if you don’t, there are other strategies.

Dance Thongs

Explaining the necessity of a thong to a young gymnast might be a hassle, but it is still the best option if you want to wear a garment under your leotard. Dance thongs, specifically, are high cut so that they don’t show under your leotard, which is the objective. They also tend to be neutral toned and thin to prevent any discomfort or visibility, but can still provide an extra level of security and protection.

Bras

Going braless isn’t really an option for most teen or adult gymnasts, as leotards are skin tight and show everything, but finding a bra that allows you free movement and doesn’t show under your leotard can be difficult. Again, dancewear comes to the rescue. There are many dance bras available that don’t have a ton of wiring so that they can allow you to move freely, and have invisible back and strap options available. Other options include sticky boobs, pasties, or some formal wear bras that offer a low back and adjustable straps.

Undergarments certainly aren’t the most glamorous part of gymnastics leotards, but they are a necessary one to consider. Finding products that work for you can save you a lot of stress in the future.
