Common Materials Used in Ducts

There are many different types of materials that are used in creating ducts for an HVAC system. Some parts require flexibility and others require strength. In this article, we will talk about two of the most commonly used materials that are used to create ducts.

Galvanized Steel

The most commonly used material that is used in duct systems is galvanized steel. You will often find it in Manual D Residential duct systems. Galvanized steel has a protective coating made of zinc. The coating prevents the metal that it is surrounding protected from rusting. This extends the life of the metal and keeps you from having to have your duct work changed every few years. The zinc coating will protect the metal even if it is scratched which prevents rust or other damage from forming and expanding through the metal.

These ducts are typically insulated to help the air retain its temperature as it travels through them. They will either be insulated inside with a layer of fiberglass, or outside with a metal blanket cover.

Aluminum

Aluminum is the next most commonly used material for duct work. Aluminum is light weight and strong. Its light weight makes it easy to lift and install throughout the house. You can create custom designed shapes using aluminum, which is one of the benefits of using it for duct systems. The light aluminum helps with the installation process and helps it hold up through the walls of the house. Because it does not have a lot of weight to support, it will be easier to keep the flex duct upright when it is installed vertically.

Aluminum can be easily cut, bent and shaped which makes it ideal for maneuvering throughout the obstacles in the house. The seams are sealed with aluminum tape and glue is applied where needed to create a secure hold.

Other Materials

These are not the only two types of materials that are used in ducts. There are many other metals and materials that you will find throughout various duct systems. A good HVAC designer will be able to implement many of these materials in order to create a perfectly optimized duct system for your home.
