Surviving Relocation: Getting Ready for the Movers

by | Dec 3, 2015 | moving

So you’ve already decided that you’re going to need some help for your big move. What now? Although it’s a moving company’s job to make the relocation process as easy as possible, there are some things you can do on your own to get a head start on the movers. West Palm Beach residents preparing for a big relocation can start getting their hands dirty weeks before the moving company even shows up, making the entire process go more smoothly and allowing for a sense of control that’s often lost in the hustle and bustle of this process. Read on for some tips on how to do some prep work.

Keep It Together
The most crucial part of a successful move is keeping you organized. Designate a binder or notebook for your move and keep it separate from all your other files. Use this space for To-Do lists, receipts, budgets, and notes. Make sure to keep hold of all the paperwork you get from the movers you’ve selected so if there is some dispute on the day of the move, you have paperwork to back you up. Accidents do happen, so you’ll want to have a copy of the agreed upon terms.

Run the Numbers
Moves can be expensive. Before you even hire the movers for your relocation, you need to have a realistic discussion about what you can afford to spend. Moving comes with a lot of costs unrelated to the professionals you hire. Keep in mind that you’ll need to set aside money for bills, and you’re old and new houses, travel costs like gas, food, and hotels, and emergency funds in case something goes wrong during the move.

Be Prepared
Some of us have done it – packed our suitcases the night before a trip only to realize we’ve stowed away the essentials we need for the next morning. Don’t do it again! Set aside a bag with essentials like toothbrushes, a change of clothes, medications, and IDs. This is helpful not only for if something gets misplaced during the move, but if you simply get to your new house and are too tired to look through boxes for your items.
