The Pros & Cons of Premarital Therapy

by | Sep 2, 2015 | Business & Economics

Premarital therapy has a variety of different benefits. It has the ability to allow couples to work through their problems before they walk down the aisle. Therapy can really help a relationship to thrive and grow. Even though there are mostly benefits to seeking out premarital therapy there are some cons that couples should also consider before they sign on to premarital couples therapy.

Pro – Outside Opinion

Getting an outside opinion can make a big difference when it comes to your marriage. Every couple faces problems, many of which they have a difficult time working out on their own. Bringing a third party into the situation can help to solve the problem at a much faster rate. Before you take it to the level of a shouting match or even a potential break-up, let someone else in to analyze the problem and to help you sort it out.

Pro – Strengthening Your Bond

What most couples don’t realize is that seeking out couple’s therapy can really strengthen their bond as a couple. A therapist can help individuals to stop taking their partners for granted and really start looking each other in a whole new light. Being able to appreciate one another is one of the most important aspects of a marriage. If you cannot appreciate and respect one another then there is little hope for marriage survival.

Con – Create Bigger Problems

Occasionally, counseling can cause bigger problems for the couple and even cause them to decide to split. The reason that it has the potential to cause problems is that you and your partner are opening up to one another like never before. There may be some words that come out that can be hurtful and could cause you to want to end things. Many couples are able to get past this while others struggle with the overwhelming amount of honesty.

Con – Bad Counselor

Not all premarital couples counselors are effective ones.  If you keep this in mind when choosing your therapist you won’t be quite as disappointed. Just like with every profession, some are better than others. You may even run into a case where the therapist was good but the chemistry wasn’t there. It is important that you find a therapist that you and your partner can form a trusting relationship with. If you do not trust your therapist it will be difficult for you to open up to them.
