Conditions That May Require Oral Surgery

by | Oct 5, 2017 | Dentist

Just the word “surgery” tends to make one think of hospitals. When the word is associated with dentistry it is far different. Oral surgery in Park Ridge takes place in the dentist’s office under local anesthetic and the recovery time is measured in hours rather than days. Although there are numerous reasons for oral surgery the two main conditions that qualify are impacted wisdom teeth and dental implants.

Impacted wisdom teeth:

Wisdom teeth are the last teeth to develop. Sometimes, but not always, wisdom teeth emerge and the jaw has sufficient room to accommodate them; but more often than not, this is not the case. Wisdom teeth can fail to emerge through the gum or they only partially emerge, they can become trapped under the gum and above the jaw bone. When a tooth is impacted the result can be extreme pain, considerable swelling at the site and infection. Not only that, impacted wisdom teeth can do permanent damage to surrounding teeth and gums.

To remove an impacted wisdom tooth the oral surgeon will have to cut through tissue and bone. In most cases the procedure takes less than an hour and is done under local anesthesia, the dentist may also place a mask over your face through which you will breathe nitrous oxide which is a relaxant.

Tooth loss:

If you have lost a tooth as a result of extreme decay or trauma you and your dentist may elect to replace the tooth root with an implant. The implant is a small titanium rod which is surgically implanted directly into the jaw bone. Once the implant stabilizes, which can take some months, an artificial tooth is attached. Dental implants are becoming the favored approach to replacing one or more teeth or to act as an anchor for a denture.

Oral surgery in Park Ridge is also called for to repair a broken jaw, dealing with sleep apnea, advanced TMJ and more.

Wisdom tooth extraction and dental implants are the common reasons why oral surgery in Park Ridge is required. For these and other dental conditions that may require surgical intervention you are invited to see the dentists at Awesome Dentistry. Follow us on twitter.
