Reduce Air Conditioner Energy Consumption, Find an HVAC Professional near Geneva

by | Jul 19, 2018 | Heating and Air Conditioning

Many homeowners in Geneva find that they use their heating and cooling system all year round. You probably use the furnace/heater in the winter and the air conditioner in the spring and summer. The Midwest is known for its brutal heat waves, some of which can cause heat indices to skyrocket into the triple digits. Therefore, on these hot days when you feel like you’re melting, you also want to keep costs low, as your electricity bill can easily skyrocket, as well.

The Thermostat

Most people believe that to feel cool and comfortable; they have to keep it at a particular temperature, usually in the high 60s or low 70s. However, when it’s 100 degrees outside, it’s not feasible to try and keep your home so cold. In fact, your unit and blower are likely to work overtime and never shut off, which means you’re wasting energy. Instead, try to keep it about 10 degrees cooler than what is outside. If it’s supposed to be 100 degrees, keeping your home at 78 or 85 degrees may not seem good enough, but it’s much cooler than what’s outside, and you keep energy bills lower.

Maintain the System

Most AC units use some of the same components as the furnace, such as the inside blower. Make sure that you get routine maintenance once a year. People with older systems may want to get maintenance twice a year before turning on the furnace and the AC for the first time. That way, everything is clean, and any issues can be fixed before they become severe.
